In order to help seniors live their healthiest and happiest lives, it’s critical that family, friends, and professionals serving in homecare roles keep up with the top issues that impact the mental and physical health of older adults. At All Seasons we help by keeping you up to date each month with three different news stories at the forefront of senior health in America.
The Connection Between PTSD and Fracture Risk
In the past decade a clear link has been discovered between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and an increased risk of fractures in seniors, which is largely due to the psychological and physical impacts of the condition. PTSD is often associated with heightened stress responses, sleep disturbances, and physical frailty, all of which can contribute to a higher risk of falls and fractures in older adults.
A study published by the National Library of Medicine, found that individuals with PTSD and insomnia had a significantly higher risk of sustaining fractures, due to the combined effects of impaired balance, reduced bone density, and chronic inflammation caused by long-term stress responses. Another study in Frontiers in Psychiatry highlighted that seniors with PTSD were at greater risk for osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, further elevating fracture risk. This evidence highlights the importance of addressing PTSD as early as possible in older adults not only for their mental health but also to reduce physical injuries like fractures.
Diets High in Processed Red Meat May Increase Risk of Dementia
A recent study that tracked people over several decades suggests that consuming processed red meat could be linked to an increased risk of developing dementia. The research highlights a potential connection between higher consumption of processed meats, like bacon and sausages, and cognitive decline over time.
While the study has not yet been peer-reviewed, its findings do add to growing concerns over the health risks associated with processed foods, particularly for older adults. The researchers conducting the study discovered that, “…the people in the study who ate at least two servings per week of processed red meat (such as bacon, bologna or hot dogs) had a 14% increased risk of dementia, compared to those who ate less than three servings per month, after the 43-year follow-up period.
The research reinforces what many already know… diets high in vegetables, legumes, and fiber, and low in sugar and fat tend to support healthy aging and reduce the risk of many diseases.

GenSpace: A New Community Center in Los Angeles Helps Older Adults Thrive
Located in Los Angeles’ Koreatown, GenSpace is a newly reimagined community space for older adults designed to promote connection, creativity, and lifelong learning. Created by Wallis Annenberg through the Annenberg Foundation, GenSpace addresses the increasing problem of social isolation among seniors, offering a wide range of activities like art, dance, tech classes, and even financial safety workshops. The community is diverse, welcoming people from all walks of life, and its mission is to foster an environment where aging is seen as a time for growth, joy, and discovery rather than decline.
Unlike traditional senior centers, GenSpace has a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging members to try new things and build new friendships with others. With affordable membership fees, thanks to philanthropic support, it provides opportunities for older adults to engage in activities like gardening, drumming, and even belly dancing. The focus on social engagement, dignity, and well-being makes GenSpace a thriving hub for older adults to enjoy their later years and provides a blueprint for at-home caregivers or family members of older adults to learn about creating fun, meaningful, connective activities for their loved ones as well.
